Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Deconstructing Christmas (with accompanying rant) : In which I take down decorations and rant about intrusive religions. (posted Jan 6, 10:58pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Not studying : I need a way to shut all the rest of the internet off except for the parts I need for class. This is the reason I do a lot of studying at Starbuck's and such places. (The real problem being, of course, that I have no self-discipline. And that's pretty insoluble.) (posted Jan 5, 3:54pm)

May Contain Spoilers : Notes on two movies. (Seriously: may contain spoilers.) (posted Jan 4, 10:55pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Books and movies : Harry Potter, Harry Dresden, Holes and more. (posted Jan 3, 11:55pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Movies of 2009, and one for 2010 : Did I really only go to see ten movies at the theater last year? (Note: Contains very mild spoiler for Up in the Air.) (posted Jan 3, 12:03am)

Wading in : One of my rotating band of psychiatrists, back when I was depressed, said that I was always the person standing in the doorway, undecided about which way to jump. (posted Jan 2, 2:21am)

The Lost Decade : A kidney stone of a decade. (posted Dec 31, 10:56pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Resolved : I don't usually make resolutions, but I feel the need to make a couple this year. (posted Dec 31, 1:35pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Father's day : It's one of those "inspired by a true story" movies; personally I have come to internally translate that phrase as "Hi, we started out with a real story but don't expect us to stick with it." (posted Dec 30, 11:37pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

2004 : It was like being in White Christmas or something. And of course the chance of a measurable snowfall in Galveston on any day at all, much less Christmas Eve, is miniscule. So it figures that we weren't there. (posted Dec 29, 10:59pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Above the line : I should probably value quality over quantity, but let's face it, I'm not ever going to be the next Joan Didion, so I mostly settle for quantity. (posted Dec 29, 2:08am)

Tolkien-ish names : Elves and humans look awfully much alike in LOTRO, except elves are a bit taller and have pointy ears which you can't see half the time anyway. I think they should have made them look a bit more different! (posted Dec 28, 2:53am)

Holiday cards : You would just not believe how much Christmas-related stuff I have. Even though we lost some ornaments in Ike - some from water damage, and some because the boxes they were in got knocked over and things broke - I still had plenty of ornaments for our (very skinny) six-foot tall tree. (posted Dec 27, 12:59pm)

On Christmas night : I'm going to be behind on Holidailies when I get back. And I don't know my passwords - to practically anything except Livejournal, and, apparently, the one to my aunt's computer because she never changes it. (posted Dec 26, 3:25pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Narratives : "We tell ourselves stories in order to live." --Who said that? (posted Dec 23, 1:45am)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Happy (belated) Solstice! : I can't say I ever thought a whole lot about the lyrics to "Do You Hear What I Hear?" but I will now. (posted Dec 22, 3:16am)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Do you want to date my Avatar? : I suspect there are technical ways, if nothing else, in which this movie will genuinely be groundbreaking, but comparing it with Star Wars as a game-changer? Not hardly. (posted Dec 21, 12:37am)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Garden State and the Doctor : If you're from Houston and you've had this movie in your Netflix queue and it said Long Wait, it may be because I've had it sitting here for about two months. Sorry about that. I'll send it back on Monday, really I will. (posted Dec 20, 2:49am)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

What are you doing Christmas Eve? : It's 5:30am and I ought to be in bed, but I'm not so let's see if I can bang out an entry real quick. I bet I can. (posted Dec 19, 5:57am)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Variations on a theme : Earlier I twittered about James Horner being a hack, and my friend said he hadn't ever heard anything bad about Horner before, but actually if you Google "James Horner is a hack" you find a number of opinions agreeing with me (posted Dec 18, 12:15am)

535 lumps of coal, please : A kid in Starbucks was earnestly explaining to the girl with him that the Bush administration wasn't as bad as their reputation, because, you see, the Democrats controlled Congress and all those bad bills that got passed during the Bush administration were all their fault. (posted Dec 17, 3:45am)

Extinction vs. obsolescence, and other randomness : I was sitting here looking at this and suddenly it was on the TV too - it's like a miracle! (posted Dec 16, 3:39pm)

O Christmas tree : It's a bit of a Charlie Brown tree, anyway. It's a six-foot tall prelit (fake) tree that cost $35, I think that tells you a lot about it right there. (posted Dec 15, 9:57pm)

In the middle of the night : On happy endings, and having a cold. (posted Dec 14, 10:59pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

The Christmas Eve gift : I guess I get to tell this story again, after all. (posted Dec 14, 1:22am)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

It's beginning to look a lot like... : My mom's Christmas quilt is on the bed, although since we rarely make the bed, this doesn't add too much in the way of décor, either. (posted Dec 12, 4:02pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Oh crap, Christmas really IS coming : We went and bought a tree so I feel obliged to actually put the damn thing up, now. (posted Dec 11, 10:20pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Random notes from the airport : The seminar cost several hundred dollars so they could afford to give us a tote bag. (posted Dec 10, 11:01pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Notes from the road, so to speak : I was wearing old jeans from Wal-Mart and the aforementioned LLBean coat - which could really stand to be washed, now that I think about it - and oh my god, it was sort of comical to watch out of the corner of my eye as the salespeople sized me up and decided whether to try to sell me anything. (posted Dec 9, 12:09pm)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Ow, my ears. : I'm sure up north the leaves are already gone, but in north Texas it's high season. (posted Dec 9, 12:02am)

Catchy Name Needed by Mel (31)

Early bedtime, and brief intro : It's a rare day, nowadays, when I get up before noon. I don't usually go to sleep until four or often later, and interestingly, I've found that I wake up almost exactly 8 hours later, on my own. So I mostly don't bother to set the alarm. It's a bit of an unexpected side-benefit of unemployment, I guess! (posted Dec 7, 2:10am)
