MissMeliss: Escribition by MissMeliss (24)
Cleansed : I light candles, scent the water, or use bubble bath, put on soft music (or, when the time is right, “Selected Shorts” on NPR), and relax. ... Maybe it is meditation in its own way: splashing meditation. (posted Jan 6, 12:17am)

Glass and Tin : But underneath it all, I feel kind of jaded, sort of disconnected. As if instead of fairy dust, all the sparkle in the world is just so much glass and tin. (posted Jan 5, 12:46pm)

MelBabble: Burning the Old Year : But giving up fear is difficult. There are some things we should be afraid of, aren’t there? War, poverty, hunger. But maybe it’s wrong to be afraid of those things. Maybe we have to see them, accept them, in order to change them. (posted Jan 5, 1:28am)

The Bone Structure of the Landscape : In my head, as we make that ride – especially in dark or foggy hours – we are not cruising down a freeway, with forested prairie on either side, but descending the ramp that leads to Tintagel, with crashing surf nipping at our horses’ hooves. (posted Jan 4, 5:27pm)

Unconscious Mutterings: 3 January 2010 (Week 362) : I know nothing about his family, but when I was little, and reading the "Little House" books, it was his face I pictured whenever Mr. Oleson was on the page. (posted Jan 3, 5:32pm)

Amazing Peace : Woefully behind or not, however, I want to share a poem with you. It’s Amazing Peace, by Maya Angelou, and I found it in book form – a dirty, well-used copy smeared with fingerprints – in the Cedar Hill Half Price Books a few days before Christmas. (posted Jan 2, 11:45pm)

Pub Music : Guinness, for example, even sounds hearty, while the average lager or pilsner lands with less surety. (posted Dec 30, 7:28pm)

Gratuitous Cuteness : Naturally, we all reached for our iPhones to snap pictures. (posted Dec 30, 12:54am)

Declarative Decaffeination : I suspect, if there were a way she could get it from the pot to her stomach without the pesky intermediary of a mug, she would find a way to remove that necessary middle step, as well. (posted Dec 28, 10:40pm)

Not even midnight : Meanwhile, my parents have arrived safely and brought a friend with them - an old family friend turned out to be one of their flight attendants. She's sacked out in my Word Lounge. (posted Dec 27, 11:26pm)

Singing with Strangers : Singing with strangers takes many forms. Sometimes it’s when you lift your voice in song during midnight Mass on a snowy December night, and sometimes it’s due to the magic of the Internet, but in all cases, it’s a marvelous thing. (posted Dec 27, 1:29am)

Other Verses: O Holy Night : Best of Holidailies Pipe dreams about recording aside, I’m not sure why I love this song so much. It’s much more religious than most of the music – even most of the Christmas tunes – I favor, and frankly, I have some issues with proclaiming the name of any king forever, whether or not they’re the son of God. Gingerbread : When humans come together to break bread, it is a true act of community. It is the tacit understanding among all who gather that while the food may nourish our bodies, it is our connections to one another which sustain our hearts, and, indeed, our souls. (posted Dec 21, 12:23am)

Sing, Sing Together : The assignment in question was to record the vocal harmony track to a song, by playing the mp3 through headphones, so that I could hear it, but only record my voice. (posted Dec 20, 2:50am)

Missing Snow : Afterward, shivering, we pulled our clothes together and met friends for late-night omelets at their favorite hangout in Brookings (posted Dec 19, 2:18am)

Kid Stuff : We ate pizza and watched movies, baked cookies, and I even helped the younger kid with his math homework. A year ago, I’d never have been brave enough to do such a thing, Now, it’s something I’d love to do again. (posted Dec 17, 12:22am)

Hollow Days : Despite this, the lights on my tree feel like they’re flatter than usual, and the magic of Christmas that usually arrives with the placement of the final ornament is still lingering in the shadows. (posted Dec 16, 1:57am)

One Blue Shoe : Whatever charity he picked ended up with several dresses, a few pairs of jeans, a really old pair of ice skates (so very useful in San Jose, CA), some books designed to teach adults how to draw, and half a pair of lovely navy pumps with French heels. (posted Dec 14, 11:01pm)

Grate. Strain. Mix. Splat. Sizzle. : To be perfectly honest, Bubble hadn’t really practiced her religion in years, either, except for choosing to be Kosher once in a while, generally when it would most inconvenience my mother. It was as if she had a mother-in-law instruction book directing her to make half-hearted attempts at competing with her daughter-in-law. (posted Dec 13, 4:03am)

Max the Monster Pup Goes Walking : In truth, I’ve been a little afraid to walk Max on my own. He’s heading into Big Dog territory, and while he’s incredibly sweet, he is exuberant, even rambunctious – he’s not quite a year old, after all, and he’s a Pointer/Boxer mix, with a dash of Dalmatian, as well. (posted Dec 12, 4:20am)

Light One Candle : I’m a big fan of the wick and the wax. I like the way candlelight softens the lines of any room so lit, and the lines of any face gazing into the flames. I like the way a single candle in a window can be a beacon of hope, or a sign of welcome. (posted Dec 11, 12:24am)

Chosen Families : In my life, I am privileged, even blessed, to have two families. The first is my biological one. At its nucleus is the duo formed by my mother and myself – we who had a Gilmore Girls-esque relationship long before the Gilmore girls were created. (posted Dec 10, 1:09am)

Surprising Beauty : I cannot capture with mere words the apparent softness of her cheek, or the way her hand gripped the microphone with such surety. My grandmother's hands, though gnarled at the end, were just as sure every time she brushed away my tears, wrapped my hand in hers, or gripped her own communication device: a wooden spoon. Silent Three-Dog Night : The rain is still falling in silent, silver streaks, and the dogs are all snoring softly, dreaming puppy dreams of fields and rabbits and bones raining from the sky. (posted Dec 8, 1:58am)
